Being Bread edition by Stephen Muse Religion Spirituality eBooks
This short book contains more in it than several lengthy books combined . It is one you'll read, reread and read again each time discovering new elements in the story and in yourself. This is not a book that you read it is a journey that you undertake alongside the author, Deacon Muse. While the questions at the end of each chapter are thought-provoking , one cannot read the stories without having one's worldview challenged and emerging better for it because the stories are told within an attitude of grace , introspection, and profound honesty. The stories themselves are enjoyable , easy to read and relatable and I don't usually enjoy short storieso. Not only have I read this book several times it is a part of my prayer ritual. Simply put his book is a gift.Product details

Being Bread edition by Stephen Muse Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Dr Stephen Muse is a consummate story teller, and his sense of humour adds to the effectiveness of his stories. He makes great use of his gift to get to the point, carrying his very willing reader along. Throughout this gem of a book, the point is, if I read him correctly, the meaning of ‘give us today our daily bread’, which, as he says, is God’s daily revelation to us through the whole of creation and especially our fellow human beings. A revelation which can go unrecognised, if not squandered or even misinterpreted as justification for feeling superior to God’s humble messengers. Without such recognition, though, “Life becomes a place to hide in unconsciousness rather than to be consciously lifted up as the royal priesthood who stand in the presence of God’s glory.”
This is a beautiful book, filled with love and wonder. It has the rare ability to give to the reader the gift of seeing the world with new eyes. One feels the loving presence of God showing in these pages. We are led to see more of this presence in our own lives as a result of our encounter with these penetrating and very honest appreciations of ordinary experience. I highly recommend this book.
Stephen Muse has done it again. He shares from the heart in such an honest authentic way that one cannot help but listen from the heart. I do not feel lectured or preached at, but rather I am drawn into his stories. I find myself identifying personally with the human encounters and the everyday situations of which he lives and writes. His gut-level honesty about his own spiritual growth pains allow the reader (me) to more fully grapple with their own (MY own). Even as I am invited to wrestle with my own spiritual-human growth, I am also strangely calmed by Muse's perspective of God's expansive love and open invitation to us... to join with him just as we are. In addition to the powerful personal recounting of tragedy, anxiety and just plain living the human condition, Dr Muse provides thoughtful discussion questions for each chapter that are helpful for individual or group work. This book could be used to enhance a Clinical Pastoral Education curriculum, Counseling supervision group or a weekly bible study. I will treasure it as a pearl in my personal library. Thanks Steven Muse for simply being bread and demonstrating how we too can be bread.
Planned to read Stephen Muse's book slowly throughout the Lenten season as part of my spiritual discipline. It's not even the 3rd Sunday in Lent and I've finished the book, it was that compelling. Muse not only pays close attention to the people and world around him, but to the tidal forces at work in his own soul. The result is an exceptional book of spiritual insights and a deeper conversation than the reader may have anticipated. Bless you Stephen for being bread for my soul!
I so appreciate this book and re-read each of the chapters several times. I love the way he takes one incident in his life or one point of reflection and makes a meditation of it. That is helpful in terms of looking at events, interactions, thoughts that occur in my own life and seeing how they are God reaching towards me, helping me to see God's face and imprint in these aspects of my life. I appreciate the honesty with which Dr. Muse discusses some of his own lessons, especially those that involve humility. Though each chapter stimulates much reflection for me, I also appreciate the questions at the end of the chapters and have used them for reflection, journaling, and self examination. Dr. Muse helps us to see life in relationship to God. I am grateful for his contribution.
I really liked this book because the author uses his own life experiences to illustrate the spiritual concepts he is trying to convey. There are too many Christian books out there that are urging you on to the Christian life and you can feel lectured. Stephen Muse uses many of his own "stories" to get his point across so that you can enter into them and feel the feelings of the people involved and feel involved yourself. It is much easier to "get the point" for yourself if you are seeing it in a third party.
Additionally, there are a set of questions at the end of each chapter so you can further ponder the concepts included there in and hopefully lead to a deeper look within.
I have read several of the Rev. Dr. Stephen's books, and I have met him and talked with him in several different contexts. I always find him to be very thoughtful, attentive, caring, vulnerable, and deeply spiritual. This book is a compilation of articles and essays that he was written and that have appeared in various journals and newsletters. A number of the chapters deal with the poor and homeless in our society. There are very probing questions after each chapter. Very good. I usually agree with him and find him challenging. I sometimes disagree with him, but I still find him challenging and informative. It is good for me to think about what he is writing, even if I take issue with it. An excellent book for pastors, church-workers, for any Christian intent on serving the Lord.
